الترجمة الإنجليزية
You have bewildered my heart
The Arabic verb hayyart is an accusation in a single word: "you have made bewildered." The beloved is grammatically the agent of the heart's chaos — blame assigned before the sentence is even finished. Egyptian colloquial can compress a whole quarrel into a verb form, and Rami builds the song's title on exactly that compression.
By 1961 Ahmed Rami had written for Umm Kulthum longer than any other poet — a partnership reaching back to the 1920s and spanning well over a hundred songs. This late lyric shows his mature colloquial manner: the ghazal's old themes of secrecy and torment, retold in the cadences of spoken Cairo.
While I dissemble, and hide it away
Two verbs of concealment in one breath — badari, to keep up appearances, and akhabbi, to hide outright. The drama of the song is not the love but the labor of covering it, a theme the Arabic lyric tradition has cherished since its classical centuries: the secret that announces itself by the effort of its keeping.
Sunbati, the architect of her grandest qasida settings, works here in a more intimate colloquial vein, and the pairing suits the text's double life: music of composed surfaces over an unquiet interior. Sources differ on the song's maqam classification, so this archive leaves the mode unlabeled rather than guess.
Tell me — what am I to do with you?
Two questions with no answer between them: what to do with you — or with my own heart? Rami turns the heart into a third party in the quarrel, as unmanageable as the beloved, and leaves the singer arbitrating a dispute in which she commands neither side.
And what am I to do with my own heart?
I long to complain to you of the fire of my love
"Baddi" — I long to, I wish I could — is the grammar of the unfulfilled: the complaint of love's fire is announced, never quite delivered. The shakwa, the lover's formal complaint, is among the oldest set pieces of Arabic song, and Rami stages it here in pure Cairene, one warm verb at a time.
I long to tell you all that lives in my heart
The confidant paradox that powers the whole lyric: the only person she can imagine telling about her heart is the very person who set it burning. Confession and concealment collapse into each other — to speak the secret is to hand it to its cause — and the melody circles these lines as if testing whether to say them at all.
You have bewildered my heart
Each return of the refrain restates the accusation, and in concert no two returns matched: she might tighten the phrase into a reproach or unspool it into a sigh, gauging the hall's temperature before choosing. The repetitions are the argument — bewilderment demonstrated rather than described.
While I dissemble, and hide it away
By the final reprises, live audiences would call out for the line before she reached it — the tarab cycle at full strength, in which anticipation, delay, and delivery matter more than forward motion. A song about a concealed heart ends as a public ritual of confession, night after night.
